Historical documents confirm that the ancestors of today’s horse population in the Danube Delta arrived there 300 to 400 years ago, brought by the Tatars. They settled there, gradually adapting to the environment, and became increasingly feral.

In the northeastern Delta (Tulcea County), between the Chilia and Sulina branches, lies the village and forest of Letea (Romanian: Pădurea Letea), covering an area of over 5,000 hectares (50,000,000 m²). This is Europe’s northernmost subtropical forest, Romania’s oldest nature reserve, and home to these horses.

Today a lazy day at the campsite, doing a bit of laundry; tomorrow we move on. A few pictures of the enchanting Danube Delta — I have many more. Hard to believe that about 25 km away, drone attacks took place last week on a Ukrainian port. Still, we feel very safe here. “

Near the cities of Socol and Bazias begins the Romanian part of the Danube, until Mila 0, the so-called zero mile, the Danube estuary in the city of Sulina. It is worth seeing that it is on the river road, until after a long journey behind the cities of Brăila and Galati in southeastern Romania, in the Danube delta, it ended approximately. 60 kilometers further in the Black Sea.

Today is a lazy day at the campsite, a bit of laundry, tomorrow we move on. A few pictures from the enchanting Danube Delta, I could share many more. It’s almost hard to believe that just 25 km away, last week, there were drone attacks on a Ukrainian port. But we feel very safe here. “

The Sulina Waterfront (promenade) is approximately five (5) km long. It starts at Mile 2 and, alongside the typical houses in blue and green, the path is interrupted by new constructions (mostly hotels and accommodations) until reaching the old center of the town.

Also, right in the town, you encounter horses that belong to no one and move freely as they please. There are few cars (as they must be brought to Sulina by ship), the clocks run slower here … and that’s a good thing!

To reach Sulina, it takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes by a small boat (max. 12 people, up to 80 km/h!!) from Tulcea. This ride must be experienced at least once.

With a length of approximately five km is the waterfront (promenade on the waterfront) of Sulina. It starts at Mila 2 and next to the typical blue and green houses, the path is dotted with new buildings (mostly hotels and accommodation) until you reach the old city center.

You can also meet horses right in the city, which do not belong to anyone and roam freely as they please. There are few cars (because they have to be brought to Sulina by boat), the clocks are slower here… and that’s a good thing!
